How to Plant Lettuce for a Continuous Harvest

Gardeners Bible · 2026-10-07

Keep salad bowls full all season by staggering your planting schedule. This method relies on choosing the right varieties for your climate and sowing seeds at regular intervals to ensure a steady supply of fresh greens without gaps in production.

What you need

  • Lettuce seeds (varieties like Salad Bowl Blend, Parris Island Cos, or Buttercrunch)
  • Containers or seed trays with potting soil
  • Grow lights or access to a bright window
  • Watering can

Steps

  1. Choose loose-leaf types that grow fast. Match the variety to your conditions: heat-loving Romaine, cool-loving Butterhead, or frost-tolerant Oak-leaf. Consider what you actually eat to avoid waste.
  2. Sow two to three seeds per container, covering them with just 1/8 inch of soil. Keep the soil moist and place under bright light or grow lights. Repeat this process every two weeks to maintain a steady supply of seedlings.
  3. Plant seeds outdoors every six to eight inches apart. Thin the seedlings to one plant per grouping. To keep the harvest flowing, sow a new batch of lettuce every three weeks.
  4. In mild climates, continue sowing during fall and winter. If you live in a very hot area, provide shade for plants to prevent them from bolting (going to seed) prematurely.
  5. Water regularly to keep soil moist. For indoor plants, keep seedlings away from harsh drafts. Use grow lights or natural sunlight as needed to ensure strong growth.
  6. Pick outer leaves or entire heads consistently. Regular harvesting helps prevent bolting. Store heads in the crisper drawer or loose leaves in containers to keep them fresh.

Why it works

Why succession planting works

Sowing at intervals ensures a steady harvest throughout the season rather than one massive crop all at once. Starting seeds indoors gives seedlings a head start and protects them from early pests.

Climate adaptation

Tailoring varieties to your local climate and preferences ensures maximum yield and taste. Indoor growing extends the season, ensuring year-round availability even when outdoor conditions are harsh.

If it goes wrong

Plants bolting too early

Bolting is often caused by heat or inconsistent water. Provide shade in hot areas and maintain consistent moisture. Harvest regularly to reduce stress on the plant.

Gaps in harvest

If you are running out of lettuce, your sowing interval may be too long. Try shortening the gap between sowings.
