Gardeners Bible · 2026-10-06

October is the time to sow spinach, lettuce, kale, radishes, garlic, and peas. Correct timing, soil prep, and spacing help establish roots before winter and set up reliable spring harvests. Choose protection methods based on your climate and available structures.

What you need

  • Lettuce seeds
  • Peacock kale seeds
  • Black radish seeds
  • Garlic cloves
  • Winter-hardy pea seeds
  • Fertile moist well-drained soil

Steps

  1. Sow peas early to mid-October. Plant spinach and lettuce in the last week of October, starting lettuce eight weeks before first frost. Sow kale from late October to early November and plant garlic from the end of October into early November.
  2. Use fertile, moist, well-drained earth for spinach and radishes, ensuring radish soil hits a pH of 6 to 6.5. Sow spinach in greenhouse border drills or propagator modules, and direct seed lettuce into prepared beds. Amend garlic planting areas with aged compost and set cloves pointy side up. Plant kale in fertile, slightly alkaline soil with at least six hours of daily sun. Sow peas into sandy, well-drained soil or deep pots in a cold frame.
  3. Transplant spinach to the border or growing bags by late October, spacing plants 6 inches apart. Thin lettuce to 6 to 8 inches. Thin kale when seedlings reach 3 inches, maintaining 6-inch spacing. Thin radishes once a few inches tall, keeping 4 to 6 inches between plants. Cover directly sown peas with cloches to protect emerging growth.

Why it works

Cool weather and root development

Spinach and peas grow best in cooler temperatures. Fall planting allows garlic to build a strong root system for larger spring bulbs. Early lettuce sowing gives plants a head start under protection before hard cold arrives.

Soil needs and spacing

Kale requires slightly alkaline soil and ample sunlight, while radishes thrive in moist, rich conditions for quick growth. Direct sowing kale and radishes matches their germination preferences. Proper spacing ensures spinach, lettuce, kale, and radishes have room to expand.

If it goes wrong

Protection variations

Sources differ on protection details. Spinach can be grown under glass or overwinter outdoors with hardy varieties. Pea sowings may go into pots under a cold frame or be sown directly with cloches; either method works depending on your setup.

Cold zones and variety options

Garlic may need mulching for winter protection in colder areas. Radish guidance focuses on black radishes, but general radish varieties and quick crops like arugula are also suitable for fall sowing.
